A journey between dance and artistic resistance reveals the possible future of the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, due to climate change in the year 2050.

The short film "Where the Sea Meets the Heartland" has recently wrapped filming, presenting a visual and poetic narrative that explores the transformation of the hinterlands and the sea into a futuristic, dystopian setting. This production blending art, dance, and environmental activism. With an approximate runtime of 20 minutes, the film integrates elements of video, music, and poetry to create a unique and impactful cinematic experience.
The movie was shot in the interior of Pernambuco from September 11 to 15, beginning with an intense day of filming in Arcoverde and later at the iconic Vale do Catimbau in Buíque. The crew stayed at the Vale Pôr do Sol Ranch, an essential partnership that provided critical support for the production from the start. Guided by local expert Zé Almeida, the team explored Catimbau’s trails, capturing the unique landscapes of Pernambuco’s hinterlands. Additional support came from F.A.G., which supplied the Pernambuco Backpack—a costume piece that added identity and authenticity to the character’s wardrobe, reinforcing her connection to the state.
The project was made possible through the Paulo Gustavo Law, which fosters cultural productions across Brazil. This support highlights the importance of initiatives that value and preserve local culture while promoting vital discussions on sustainability through art.
Post-Production
Currently, "Where the Sea Meets the Heartland" is in post-production, a phase where all visual, sound, and editing elements come together to finalize the film. Scheduled for release in December 2024, the team is working diligently to deliver a project that will captivate and move audiences.
Accessibility is also a priority during this stage, with subtitles and audio descriptions ensuring the film’s message reaches as wide an audience as possible.
A Call to Action
"The film is a call to action." - By Elle Moon

Synopsis
In the near future, the state of Pernambuco faces the brink of flooding due to extreme climate changes. This news prompts the protagonist on a solitary journey through abandoned roads, finding in the ruins a profound connection to her roots. Dance becomes her sole means of communication as nature reclaims its space. An ancient prophecy comes true: the hinterland turns into the sea. "Where the Sea Meets the Heartland" is a videodance short film that delves into themes of change and identity.
Message
Projections indicate that Pernambuco may face more severe climate conditions starting in 2041. In the Sertão region of Pernambuco, for example, temperatures are expected to rise by 3.7°C (ALVES, 2024). These events are no longer isolated; they serve as urgent calls to reevaluate our relationship with the planet and the history we carry.
How long will we continue to ignore nature’s warnings and the lessons of the past? In times of uncertainty, taking action is an act of resistance, hope, and love. Thus, "Where the Sea Meets the Heartland" invites audiences to envision a future where human beings and nature coexist harmoniously.
