Last Friday, August 1st, the short film “Where the Sea meets the Heartland” was screened in the town of Buíque, in Pernambuco’s arid heartlands, as part of the official program of the Pernambuco Meu País Festival. The session took place at 3:30 PM in the auditorium of the State Technical School Journalist Cyl Galindo, gathering students, teachers, locals, and lovers of regional cinema.
The screening held special meaning: Buíque served as the film’s primary setting. The story pays tribute to the contrasts, memories, and strength of the backlands people — making the film’s return to its birthplace a true act of celebration.
🌾 About the Film
Set in the year 2050, “Where the Sea meets the Heartlands” imagines a Pernambuco heartland on the verge of being submerged due to extreme climate change. The protagonist embarks on a solitary journey through deserted roads, finding in the ruins a deep connection to her roots. Dance becomes her only means of expression as nature reclaims its space. An ancestral prophecy unfolds: the backlands turn into sea.
Blending experimental videodance and narrative cinema, the short film explores transformation, identity, and the resilience of those who belong to the land.

📣 From the Director

“This film was born here. It was imagined, felt, and filmed on this very land. To return with it complete is to give back to the place that gave us everything. It’s a gesture of gratitude and dialogue with the people who truly matter.” - Elle
